What Do Mormons Believe?–Article of Faith #7

Jesus Raising Jairus' Daughter

We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

Certain signs and gifts have always followed those that believe.  For instance Mark 16:17-18 states, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

In addition, we find that on the Day of Pentecost, the gift of tongues was used in order that each person could hear the gospel in his own language.  Acts 2:4-8 states, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.  And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.  Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.  And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans?  And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?”

Jesus Healing a Blind Man

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we know that these spiritual gifts are still available to God’s children today.  It is important to note that these gifts are given for the benefit of those who already believe; they are not given for the purpose of convincing one that a particular church or doctrine is true.  Jesus himself said that “. . . An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas” (Mathew 12:39).  In addition, the Gift of Tongues was not and is not used as a means of showing some mystical power, but rather so that each person can hear the gospel in his own language.  Today the Gift of Tongues is still in operation as thousands of missionaries go throughout the world teaching the gospel to the people of many nations in their native tongue.  God desires to bless His children and for those who believe, He will do so in miraculous and powerful ways.
